Performing Arts » Chorus

The Chorus program at St. Pius X is regularly recognized at New Mexico Music Educators Association as a high quality experience for young singers.

Students are exposed to a wealth of music, not only to the best contemporary music but to classical and liturgical pieces not often included in high school curriculum. Participation in Church liturgical music at regular school masses brings a sacred musical experience unique among high schools in Albuquerque.

Choral Director John Reith joined the program in Fall 2012. He has taught high school and has a strong background in pastoral ministry and music. He also teaches guitar and plays the piano.

Students are encouraged to participate in all New Mexico Music Educators Association solo and ensemble competitions as well as the annual All State Conference competition where the finest young voices in the state are recognized. For the SPX campus community, chorus students present the Hispanic Heritage Celebration Concert, a fall concert, participate in a Christmas concert, and participate in the spring SPX production of Broadway Olé.

Class offerings are available for varied levels of music knowledge and experience:

Concert Choir

The concert choir is a freshman and sophomore group designed to teach students the techniques of singing and the mechanism of music reading. The students are exposed to all kinds of music, including pieces from the standard choral repertoire, as well as fun, upbeat, music. This class is a pre-requisite to the other choirs.

Mixed Choir: Bel Canto
This choir is designed for advanced musicians. Students develop their vocal quality and music reading skill. This class is designed for students in grades 10-12 who have completed a year of Concert Choir and who pass a competitive vocal audition that tests their vocal maturity and music reading ability. The repertoire for this choir is college-level choral music.
