Future Leaders in Action: St. Pius X Students Make Their Mark at the Roundhouse

This past weekend, SPX faculty members Dr. Diane Ball and Mr. Nic Giron, along with 12 St. Pius X students, traveled to the Roundhouse in Santa Fe to participate in the 70th Annual Youth and Government State Conference. Students took part in the Legislative Branch by writing bills and presenting them in either the House or Senate. Others served as counsel or judges for the State Appellate Court, worked with the media organization, participated in lobbying, or joined the 8th Grade Page Program.

We had several students serving as representatives: Savannah Ball, Slayde Aragon, Gloria Guerin, Valerie Gurule, and Senator Kolbe Padilla. Kenya Dominguez and Beatrice Canlan managed our social media posts. We also had outstanding teams representing a voting rights case in the Judicial Branch: Emily and Sarah Stone, Melissa Canavan, and Joziah Chama.

Gloria Guerin successfully pushed her bill—to replace cancer-causing receipts from businesses—through both houses, and it was signed into law by Student Governor Liam Perea. Emily Stone received an award for Best Student Judge, and 8th grader John Johnson was named Runner-Up Page.
