M.A.D. Against Hunger Packing Day

Since 2008, St. Pius X has come together as a community to feed the hungry. Student Ali Frumkin had worked with Kids Against Hunger, an organization to feed kids and families around the world, at Holy Ghost School. Ali worked with Alicia Eiler, community service coordinator to bring the project to St. Pius X.

Since then, each year students work to raise money though pizza sales, jeans days and other drives to purchase the bulk ingredients for nutritious meals to be packaged at the school. The highly nutritious meals formulated by a team of food scientists for the Kids Against Hunger program are 52 percent protein, rice, six vegetables with an additional 21 vitamins and minerals. All students participate to combine and package the ingredients for the meals that are delivered from Haiti to New Mexico. In the last several years, 80 percent of the meals have been distributed in New Mexico. Packaging day is held during Holy Week as a time to reflect upon the sacrifices and giving to others as part of the Lenten observance.

Other Albuquerque and area schools are invited to participate on packaging day. Holy Ghost, St. Mary’s, Our Lady of Annunciation, Our Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of Assumption, St. Therese, San Felipe de Neri; Santa Fe schools, St. Michael’s High School, Santo Nino Regional Catholic School; Grants Catholic High School, Salpointe High School from Tucson, Arizona are some of the participants.
