After three seasons leading the St. Pius X School baseball program, head coach James Stebbins has stepped down as head coach of the Sartans.

Stebbins helped guide the Sartans to consistent success during his three-year tenure, finishing with an overall record of 50-34. Under his leadership, St. Pius X reached the postseason in each season, including a trip to the Class 4A state quarterfinals this past spring before falling to No. 1 seed Artesia.

The Sartans finished the 2026 season with a 15-13 overall record and a 5-3 mark in District 5-4A. In 2025, St. Pius X captured the District 5-4A championship after finishing 18-12 overall and a perfect 8-0 in district play. The program also posted a 17-9 overall record and a 5-3 district finish during the 2024 season.

St. Pius X Athletic Director Jim Cook expressed appreciation for Stebbins’ impact on the program and school community.

“We are extremely grateful for the work Coach Stebbins has done for our baseball program and for the dedication he showed to our student-athletes throughout his time at St. Pius X,” Cook said. “He helped establish a strong culture within the program, represented our school with class, and played an important role in the continued growth of Sartan baseball. We thank him for everything he has done for our community and wish him nothing but the best moving forward.”

Following Stebbins’ resignation, St. Pius X School moved quickly to promote four-year assistant coach Kurt Hurley to interim head coach.

Hurley, a 2007 graduate of St. Pius X, has been heavily involved within the baseball program and school community over the past several years and now takes over the program he once played for as a Sartan student-athlete.

“I love the St. Pius X community, and I can’t thank Coach Stebbins enough for what he has done for this program,” Hurley said. “I look forward to building off the foundation he helped establish and continuing our vision centered around discipline, accountability, faith, and service. I’m incredibly fortunate for the opportunity to guide this program at a school whose mission is focused on developing young people into ethical leaders who serve others.”

Players, incoming students, and current members of the program interested in offseason workouts or program information are encouraged to contact coach Kurt Hurley at [email protected].
