St. Pius X Athletics Recap: May 11–16

Athletics Rugby and Golf

HIGH SCHOOL RUGBY

St. Pius X Rugby had a strong showing at the New Mexico High School State Tournament, hosted on the Sartans’ home turf.

The U14 Coed team finished as state runner-up, the U16 Boys also earned runner-up honors, and the U19 Boys finished in third place.

The program also had five players earn All-State honors: Tony Ruiz, TJ Maldonado, Dominic Bellisario, Kane Huffmyer, and Isaiah Balboa.

Congratulations to Coach Bellisario, the rugby program, and all of the athletes recognized for an outstanding season.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

The St. Pius X softball team wrapped up an excellent season with a state tournament appearance, a District 5-4A championship, and a 22-7 overall record.

The Sartans went a perfect 8-0 in district play before seeing their state tournament run end Thursday in a tough battle against Goddard.

St. Pius X continued to compete at the plate, led by Jordan Chavez, who went 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI. Zoë Mangrum also went 2-for-3 with a double, while Sophia Trujillo and Jaelyn Olloway each added hits.

It was a strong season for the Sartans, who finished as one of the top teams in Class 4A.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

The St. Pius X baseball team closed its season at 15-13 overall and 5-3 in District 5-4A.

The Sartans finished the year playing some of their best baseball, winning seven of their final nine games. Their season ended in the state quarterfinals with a hard-fought 3-2 loss to No. 1 seed and defending state champion Artesia.

St. Pius X battled until the final inning, taking a 2-0 lead before Artesia rallied late. The postseason run included a first-round sweep of Grants, giving the Sartans a strong finish to the year.

HIGH SCHOOL GOLF

The St. Pius X girls golf team brought home a third-place finish at the 2026 New Mexico High School State Championships.

The Sartans shot a two-round total of 736, finishing behind Albuquerque Academy and Lovington while placing ahead of Kirtland Central and Goddard.

Parker Wilson led St. Pius X with a seventh-place individual finish, shooting 84 and 86 for a total of 170. Malia Gallegos tied for 14th with a 182, while Dielissandra Molina tied for 16th with a 183. Amelie Kalina finished 27th, and London Forrest rounded out the Sartans’ state lineup.

HIGH SCHOOL TRACK & FIELD

The St. Pius X track and field teams turned in a strong performance at the 4A State Championships.

The boys team finished fifth overall with 48 points, while the girls team tied for ninth with 18 points.

Hershul Olloway delivered one of the top performances of the meet, winning the 4A 100-meter dash in 10.81 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 21.80 seconds. The Sartans dominated the boys 100, going 1-2-3 with Olloway, Curtis Flakes III, and Zachary Katz. Olloway and Flakes also finished 1-2 in the 200-meter final, with Olloway earning recognition as the 4A boys high-point athlete.

Additional state highlights included Vanessa Cichy placing third in the girls long jump and second in the triple jump, Silas Brown finishing sixth in the boys 3200-meter run, Quinlan Wilson placing sixth in the boys high jump, and the boys 4x800-meter relay team finishing fifth.
