Sartan Athletics Recap: January 12–17

This week’s St. Pius X School Sartan Athletics Recap highlights a busy and competitive stretch for winter sports, led by strong tournament performances from both high school basketball programs and the opening week of middle school action. Here’s a look at what happened and what’s ahead.

Boys Basketball

High School

The varsity boys opened the week at home in St. Sebastian Gymnasium with a hard-fought matchup against fourth-ranked Del Norte, falling 50–43 in a competitive game. Senior Marcos Chavez led the Sartans with 14 points, while fellow senior Quinnlin Wilson added eight points, including two three-pointers.

The JV squad picked up a 48–43 win over Del Norte behind a balanced scoring effort. Alex Sims paced the team with 11 points, and 12 different Sartans found the scoring column. The C-Team also earned a convincing 51–21 victory. Coren Burkett led the way with nine points, Josh Fisher added eight, and Angelo Lucero chipped in seven.

Later in the week, varsity competed in the Hope Christian Tournament, finishing third overall. The Sartans opened tournament play with a 48–28 win over Hot Springs before falling to top-ranked Artesia in the semifinals. They closed the weekend in strong fashion with a dominant 71–39 win over Bloomfield in the third-place game. Marcos Chavez and Quinnlin Wilson were both named to the All-Tournament Team.

St. Pius X now sits at 7–9 overall and has won four of its last seven games heading into district play.

The Sartans return to action Tuesday, January 20, on the road at Belen to open District 5-4A play, with all three levels in action. They follow that with another district road trip to Grants on Friday.

Middle School

Middle school boys basketball tipped off its season this week, and both teams opened with wins. Team Black earned a 22-point victory over Santa Fe Prep, while Team White defeated Albuquerque Academy in their season opener. For Team Black, the team was led in scoring by Connor Power, Parker Grine, Josaiah Barboa, and Trevor Messer.

Girls Basketball

High School

The Sartan girls also turned in a strong week, improving to 8–8 overall and finishing third at the Hope Christian Tournament.

They opened tournament play with a dominant 57–11 win over Bloomfield, then fell to host Hope Christian before closing the weekend with a statement 52–44 win over Artesia in the third-place game.

Eighth graders Addison Love and Amiyah Cunningham were both named to the All-Tournament Team. In the opening win over Bloomfield, Amiyah Cunningham led all scorers with 21 points and was the only player in double figures. Jaelynn Olloway added nine points, Addison Love finished with eight, and Gnilane Thiam pulled down nine rebounds.

The Sartans open District 5-4A play at home on Tuesday, January 20, hosting Belen in St. Sebastian Gymnasium (varsity at 7 p.m.). They will also host Grants on Friday in another key district matchup.
