Sartan Athletics Recap: December 8–18

Sartan Athletics stayed busy over a packed stretch from December 8–18, highlighted by challenging non-district competition on the basketball courts and a full slate of activity across winter sports as the calendar turns toward the holiday break.

Boys Basketball

The Sartan boys varsity basketball team sits at 2–3 on the season after navigating one of the more demanding early schedules in the area. Most recently, the Sartans dropped a hard-fought contest to highly ranked 5A Atrisco Heritage, falling 78–64 in a game that tested them on both ends of the floor against a top-tier opponent.

The boys will return to action on December 29 at the Rio Rancho High School Tournament, where they will face an unbeaten Navajo Prep squad carrying a 3–0 record. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m., opening a three-day tournament run that continues through December 31.

At the sub-varsity level, the C Team boys were also in action during the window, traveling to Estancia for a road matchup as the program continues to build.

Girls Basketball

The Sartan girls varsity team competed in the Rio Rancho Tournament from December 11–13, finishing the event with a 1–2 record against a rugged slate of 5A competition. Both losses came in tightly contested games, falling to ranked Mayfield, 60–51, and La Cueva, 55–49, while securing an impressive 67–57 win over Clovis.

In the loss to Mayfield, junior Marizia Valdez led the Sartans with 15 points. Eighth grader Amiyah Cunningham added 10 points, while freshman Jaelyn Olloway Jr. contributed five points and seven rebounds.

The win over Clovis showcased the team’s young core, as Amiyah Cunningham led all scorers with 23 points and four assists. Fellow eighth grader Addison Love delivered a strong all-around performance with 19 points and six rebounds. Marizia Valdez chipped in 12 points, while junior Leia Aguon played a key role with seven points and seven rebounds.

Against La Cueva, Amiyah Cunningham once again paced the offense with 23 points, with Addison Love also reaching double figures with 16. Junior Madeline Warren made her presence felt on the glass, pulling down five rebounds.

The Sartans will be back on the floor January 1 at the Bernalillo Holiday Classic, where they will open the new year against another 5A opponent in Eldorado. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.

Other Sartan Athletics

Beyond basketball, Sartan Athletics remained active across multiple programs. Middle school swimmers competed at Albuquerque Academy, while additional contests took place at West Mesa High School during the recap window.

Looking ahead, wrestling takes center stage as the high school team travels to Grants High School on December 20, followed by middle school wrestling action at Silver High School on December 21. The middle school wrestling schedule continues December 28 at South Valley Wrestling Club.

From the hardwood to the mat and the pool, December has been an active and competitive stretch for Sartan Athletics, with plenty more on the horizon as winter sports continue to ramp up.
