The varsity girls basketball team opened the season with an impressive win before running into two of the state’s premier programs. St. Pius X moved to 1-2 on the year after defeating Los Alamos 72–32 in Monday’s home opener. The Sartans showcased their young core, highlighted by Amiyah Cunningham (2030), who continues to establish herself as the team’s early scoring leader, averaging 16.0 points and 3.7 rebounds through the first three games. Addison Love (2030) and Leia Aragon (2027) also delivered strong performances during the opening week, helping the Sartans post 156 points across their three outings.

On Thursday, SPX traveled to La Cueva and fell 77–56 despite competing well for stretches against one of the state’s deepest Class 5A rosters. Saturday’s matchup brought perennial powerhouse Kirtland Central to Albuquerque, and the Broncos’ defensive pressure proved too much as the Sartans dropped a 65–28 decision. Through the first three games, St. Pius X has leaned on the energy and consistency of Marizia Valdez (2027), Leia Aguon (2027), Jaelyn Olloway (2029), Mikaela Trujillo (2026), Milanah Sanchez (2028), G nilane Thiam (2028), and Madeline Warren (2027), each contributing key minutes during a challenging opening slate.

The JV girls team also opened its season with a competitive week, beginning with a home matchup against Los Alamos. In that contest, the Sartans fell 50–31, followed by a 42–22 road loss at La Cueva on Thursday. Strong stretches of defensive effort and ball movement continue to be building points for the JV team as they prepare for a Tuesday matchup at West Mesa.

Boys Basketball

On the boys basketball side, the Sartans bounced back from an 0-2 start to finish the week at 2-2 overall after an outstanding showing at the Sandia Prep Invitational. The week began with a road battle at St. Michael’s, where SPX narrowly fell 67–63 in a high-energy environment. The Sartans then played Manzano in the Invitational opener, dropping a 61–50 contest before turning the corner and winning the final two games of the tournament.

St. Pius X defeated Robertson 59–42 on Friday, followed by a strong 64–51 victory over Clint (TX) on Saturday to close out tournament play with a 2-1 record and claim fifth place. The team’s 236 points scored across the first four games reflect an offense beginning to find rhythm as the Sartans prepare for a Monday night test against Atrisco Heritage Academy.

More Sports

Additional Sartan athletics programs were also active this week. The wrestling team opened its season on Saturday at Los Lunas, gaining valuable early-season mat experience. The St. Pius X swim team competed at Albuquerque Academy, continuing to build momentum toward a busy winter schedule. Middle school girls basketball was in action multiple times during the week, with White, Gold, and Black teams competing at Cottonwood, Sandia Prep, Eagle Ridge, and at home. The Dorados Dance Team delivered its annual Christmas Show on Friday.
