High School
The St. Pius X varsity baseball team closed out the regular season in dominant fashion, defeating Highland 18-1 on Senior Night at home. The Sartans erupted for six runs in the second inning and followed it up with a 12-run fourth to end the game after five innings by mercy rule.
Senior Jacob Madrid went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored to lead the offensive onslaught. Fellow seniors Alex Garcia and Jax Mulville each added two hits, with Mulville driving in three. Junior Zain Unis crossed the plate three times, while freshman Nicholas Casco and junior Kaiden Swanson also added RBIs in the win.
With the victory, St. Pius X finishes the regular season 15-11 overall, 8-0 in district, as District 5-4A champions and has been awarded the No. 2 seed in the 2025 NMAA State Baseball Championships. The Sartans will host No. 15 seed Kirtland Central in the first round on Friday, May 9, in a best-of-three series for a spot in the quarterfinals on May 15.

Golf
Both the Boys and Girls Varsity Golf teams put together strong performances at the Metro Championships, each finishing in 3rd place in their respective divisions. The Sartans now shift their attention to the District Tournament, set for Monday, May 5, at the UNM Championship Course.
Softball
The St. Pius X varsity softball team wrapped up its regular season in dominant fashion, defeating Highland 23-0 on the road last Friday. With the win, the Sartans finished the regular season 12-13 overall and 7-1 in District 5-4A, earning the District Championship.
Despite featuring a young roster, the Sartans showed consistent improvement and competitive spiritthroughout the season. In their final game, the offense exploded for 23 runs on 14 hits in just four innings. Sophomore Jordan Chavez went 2-for-3 with three runs, two RBIs, and a pair of extra-base hits. Eighth-grader Diamor Ibarra-Villegas had a perfect day at the plate, reaching base four times with two hits, two RBIs, and four runs scored.
Freshman Grace Grady contributed two hits, two RBIs, and scored four runs, while juniors Isabella Caba and Davianna Romero, and sophomores AUbri Hooee, Daniella Morett, and Lilee Zarate each added to the offensive surge with strong performances.
With the district title secured, the Sartans have officially qualified for the 2025 NMAA State Softball Tournament. They enter as the No. 9 seed and will travel to Silver City for the opening round play-in game against No. 8 seed Kirtland Central on Friday, May 9 at 4:00 PM.
If victorious, St. Pius X will advance to face the winner of No. 1 seed Silver and No. 16 seed Valencia in the first round of the state tournament on Saturday, May 10 at 11:00 AM.

Tennis
The Girls Varsity Tennis team had a strong showing at the District Tournament, with all players advancing past their opening-round matches. Several Sartans reached the quarterfinals, and a few continued their impressive run all the way to the final round. It was a competitive and spirited performance that capped off a successful season for the team.
Girls Singles: Lena Hernandez '25 is the District Champion.
Boys Singles: Mateo Certain '26 finishes 3rd Place.
Boys Doubles: Jude Benavides '27 and John Johnson '29 take 2nd place.
Track & Field
Congratulations to the St. Pius X Boys Track & Field team on their impressive 3rd place finish at the Metro Championships. The Sartans were led by senior Bryan Thomas, who was named Metro High Point Athlete after winning both the 200-meter and 400-meter dash.
Sophomores Gianna Archuleta and Hershul Olloway Jr. added to the medal count, each claiming Metro Championship titles in the 100-meter dash. The standout performances didn’t stop there—all three athletes, along with two boys relay teams, set new school records during the meet. The strong showing sets the stage for an exciting run at District and State competition.
Volleyball
The St. Pius X Men’s Volleyball team will host a home doubleheader tonight, beginning at 6:00 PM. The Sartans face Albuquerque High in the opener, followed by a second match against Albuquerque Academy at 7:00 PM.
Tonight also marks Senior Night as the program honors its ten graduating seniors. Fans, families, and the school community are encouraged to attend and show their support for the team in their final home appearance of the season.
Water Polo
The Girls Water Polo team repeated as New Mexico State Champions, securing back-to-back titles with a commanding performance in the finals. Sartans Ava Marie Machtinger and Dani Madrid played key roles in the team’s dominant championship run, showcasing leadership and elite-level play throughout the tournament.
On the boys' side, St. Pius X claimed Second Place at State for the second consecutive year. Sophomores Branson Whitson and Griffin Wells were both honored with All-State Team selections, capping off another remarkable season for the program.
