Excited for what’s to come, the St. Pius X cheerleaders welcome three men to the team, making us a co-ed team. The cheerleaders plan to attend competitions throughout the year, including Metro (Dec 15), Dallas Nationals (Jan 26), Heart of Gold LLHS (Feb. 16), and Heart of the Tiger Aztec (March 9). Looking forward to the experience, the cheerleaders are ready to compete. Coaches, SPX Staff and Parents are all very proud of the determination that drives these athletes. They have the tools to keep moving up in the sport. Good Job SPX Cheer!
The cheerleaders are an extremely talented group of athletes; the sport is concentrated with tumbling, stunting, jumps and crowd involvement. The cheerleaders consist of students from grades 9 through 12.
The devotion and perseverance that the cheerleaders show, is a shining example, to the school and sets a foundation for newcomers to strive for. The cheer program’s focus is on cheering for all SPX sports teams and to be a competitive team. The team will be cheering for all home games, assemblies, pep rallys; supporting the Black and Gold.
Coach Marlene Barela has coached cheerleading for over 16 years, including schools in both Colorado and New Mexico. She has coached High School (All girl and Co-Ed), Middle School, All Stars and was the 2015-16 Young American Cheerleading President. She has taken her squads to competitions placing 1st and also taking the grand champion title. Marlene’s dedication to the program is immeasurable. Marlene’s goal for the St. Pius X Cheer Program is to build a solid foundation to provide growth.
Coach Annaliese Smith is a St. Pius X Alumni (Class of 2017). Annaliese cheered on the Eastern New Mexico Co-ed Cheerleading team. She brings knowledge and skill to the team. We are happy to have her continue the SPX tradition in building a solid Cheerleading Program.
Tryouts are planned for the Spring of 2019 (first or second week in May). Please contact Coach Marlene for more details.
HS Students trying out must provide a copy of their grades and have a physical on file. Middle school incoming 9th graders will not need to provide grades or physical. A tryout packet will be given to cheerleader candidates on the first day of tryouts. Candidates will learn a dance, a cheer, a basic stunt, and showcase their tumbling skills (tumbling is not a requirement).
You can play sports and be on the JV Cheerleading squad 😊
