High School

Baseball

The St. Pius X varsity baseball team continued its dominant run through District 5-4A, securing two important victories last week to officially capture the District 5-4A regular season championship.

Tuesday, April 22 — St. Pius X 2, Grants 1
In a tightly contested road game, the Sartans edged past Grants, 2-1. Freshman pitcher Hunter Jiron was outstanding on the mound, tossing six strong innings while allowing just one unearned run and striking out three. Senior Jacob Madrid led the offense with a solo home run and drove in two runs, while sophomore Brennan Craver, junior Zain Unis, sophomore Diego Trujillo, and sophomore Joaquin Aragon each added key hits. Despite being out-hit 8-5, the Sartans made their chances count, holding on late for the win.

Friday, April 25 — St. Pius X 9, Valencia 2
Back home on Friday afternoon, the Sartans kept rolling with a 9-2 victory over Valencia. Senior Ashton Warren pitched five strong innings, allowing just four hits and two runs while striking out eight. Senior Nathaniel Miera closed out the final two innings with two strikeouts.
At the plate, senior Michael Deller went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs to pace the offense. Junior Zain Unis added a triple, and sophomore Joaquin Aragon reached base three times, scoring twice. Freshman Nicholas Casco also contributed with a hit and an RBI. The Sartans struck early with six runs in the first inning and never looked back, sealing their perfect run through the district.

Softball

The St. Pius X varsity softball team moved to 11-13 overall and 6-1 in District 5-4A following a split week, highlighted by a dominant win over Grants. The Sartans now head into their final regular-season game with a chance to secure the District 5-4A championship against Highland.

Tuesday, April 22 — St. Pius X 20, Grants 3
The Sartans exploded offensively in a three-inning win over Grants, posting 20 runs on 11 hits. Sophomore Jordan Chavez powered the attack, going 3-for-4 with a home run, two doubles, and five RBIs. Freshman Grace Grady added two hits and two RBIs, while junior Daniella Romero collected two hits and five RBIs. Sophomore Dominique Morett pitched all three innings, giving up just one hit and striking out five to earn the win in the circle.

Friday, April 25 — Valencia 13, St. Pius X 12
In a back-and-forth battle, the Sartans fell just short against Valencia, 13-12. Despite outhitting Valencia with 15 hits, errors proved costly for St. Pius X. Eighth-grader Diamor Ibarra-Villegas continued her strong season with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, while sophomore Dominique Morett drove in five runs with two doubles. Junior Sophia Trujillo and sophomore Jordan Chavez each added home runs in the high-scoring contest. Sophomore pitcher Lilee Zarate recorded six strikeouts across five innings of work.
