Athletic Review: September 23-28

Football: The varsity football team improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in district play with a 14-6 victory over Silver High School on Thursday evening at Albuquerque’s Community Stadium. Quarterback Isaiah Carpenter threw for 212 yards and two touchdowns. Receivers Bryan Thomas and Cayl Cox-Liggins were key contributors, recording 66 and 67 receiving yards respectively, with each scoring a touchdown. Sophomore running back Hershul Olloway Jr. added 94 rushing yards to help secure the win. They will be in action again Thursday night at Community Stadium taking on Albuquerque Academy.

 

Golf: The varsity girls and boys golf teams both secured second-place finishes at a tournament held at Los Altos Golf Course in Albuquerque.

 

Soccer (Co-Ed, Middle School) The Sartans Middle School co-ed soccer team secured a thrilling 4-3 victory over Albuquerque Academy in a tightly contested match. Karlos Kuria opened the scoring with a burst of speed to net the first goal. Andres Rivas added the second with a fantastic header off a perfectly placed corner from Lucas Maestas. Kyael Quintal then fired St. Pius into the lead with a powerful solo effort, too quick for the Academy goalkeeper. Finally, Lucas Maestas capped off the win, transitioning from provider to scorer, with a beautiful curler from the edge of the box that sealed the victory!

 

Soccer (Boys): The St. Pius X varsity boys soccer team opened district play in commanding fashion with a 10-0 victory over Belen. Five different players contributed to the Sartans' dominant performance. Nico Reyes and Lane Yarbrough each recorded hat tricks with 3 goals apiece, Diego Herrera added 2 goals, and Tim Dyson and Ethan Wright each chipped in a goal. Senior Noah Devany was instrumental, providing 3 assists to help secure the win.

The Sartans secured their second victory of the week with another 10-0 win, this time over the Grants Pirates. In this district match, seven different players found the back of the net. Noah Devany, Mateo Certain, and Kyle Calderon each scored twice, while Nico Reyes, Tim Dyson, Lane Yarbrough, and Diego Herrera each added a goal. Didier Herrera and Santi Munoz also contributed with two assists apiece. They now sit with a 9-3 overall record and 2-0 in district play. 

Junior Varsity: On Tuesday, the junior varsity team continued the winning streak with a victory over Highland High School.

 

Soccer (Girls): The varsity girls soccer team had a strong week, starting with a 7-1 victory over Belen on Tuesday, ending a three-game losing streak and bringing their season record to 4-6 overall and 1-0 in district play. The Sartans followed up with a dominant 10-0 win over Grants on Thursday afternoon, improving to 5-6 overall and 2-0 in district. In the victory over Grants, ten different players found the back of the net: Aubrey Rodela, Audrey Mileshosky, Maddilyn Garcia, Analisa Aragon, Carina Suarez, Penelope Lee, Vanessa Cichy, Alicia Sapien, Izabella Cotinola, and Zia Valdez each scored a goal. Kiley Patalan secured the shutout as the goaltender.

 

Tennis: Sartan middle school tennis participated in a tournament at Sandia Prep.

Volleyball:

Varsity: On Monday, the Sartans defeated 3A powerhouse St. Michael’s High School, 3-1, on their home court at Sebastian Gymnasium, improving their overall record to 7-1. On Saturday, St. Pius X faced off against the top-ranked team in New Mexico, falling in a hard-fought battle against Las Cruces High School at the Rio Rancho Volleybash Tournament. The Sartans finished 4th out of 16 teams. Their next match is scheduled for Tuesday, October 1st, at Albuquerque Academy.

Junior Varsity: We would like to highlight a notable achievement from last week: our junior varsity team earned second place at the highly competitive Rio Rancho tournament. On Monday, the JV team faced St. Michael’s High School in a hard-fought match winning, 2-1.

C-Team: On Monday, the C-team continued their impressive start to the season, improving to 4-0 with a 2-0 victory over St. Michael’s.
