Chorus

Students are exposed to a wealth of music, including contemporary, classical, and liturgical pieces not often included in high school curricula. Participation in liturgical music at regular school masses brings a sacred musical experience unique among high schools in Albuquerque.

Students are encouraged to participate in all New Mexico Music Educators Association (NMMEA) solo and ensemble competitions, as well as the annual All State Conference competition, where the finest young voices in the state are recognized. For the SPX community, chorus students participate in the Hispanic Heritage Celebration Concert, Halloween Show, Christmas concert, and Spring Arts Festival.

Class offerings are available for varied levels of music knowledge and experience:

Concert Choir
The concert choir is a freshman and sophomore group designed to teach students the techniques of singing and music reading. Students are exposed to various genres of music, including pieces from the standard choral repertoire, as well as fun, upbeat, music. This class is a prerequisite to the other choirs.

Mixed Choir: Bel Canto
This choir is designed for advanced musicians. Students develop their vocal quality and music reading skills. This class is open to students in grades 10-12 who have completed a year of Concert Choir and passed a competitive vocal audition that tests their vocal maturity and music reading ability. The repertoire for this choir is college-level choral music.

The Chorus program at St. Pius X is regularly recognized by the NMMEA as a high quality experience for young singers. Choral Director, Clarissa Clark, was recently elected Vice President of Choral Activities for the 2019-2021 term by the NMMEA. The state wide ballot included musician's at all levels.
